
Personal Protection Outside the Home Course
Course Overview:
The NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home course picks up where NRA Personal Protection in the Home left off. This 2-day 14-hour course contains both Level 1 and Level 2 (Basic and Advanced) shooting techniques. Students will learn how to properly draw a firearm the holster, movement, and firearm manipulations.
Day 1: Classroom lecture and hands on “dry fire” training. The class continues down the path of considerations such as legal, use of force, conflict avoidance and situational preparedness. Our focus during the Personal Protection Outside the Home course is how you can make effective use of a concealed handgun to protect yourself and your family on the street, on the road, in malls and stores, in parking lots, and elsewhere other than in your own home.
Day 2: Range Day
Class instruction and techniques involve a stressful, fast paced, dynamic shooting environment. By the end of the course the student will be able to draw, move, shoot, load, reload and engage targets as necessary while maintaining, situational awareness.

- Strategies for Personal Safety Outside the Home
- Legal aspects of self-defense and Florida law overview
- Carrying a Concealed Handgun and Presenting from Concealment
- Responding to a violent confrontation
Course Goal:
To instill in students the foundational knowledge and skills for using a handgun safely and effectively for self-defense outside of the home, while educating them on the legal rights and responsibilities of a law-abiding citizen.
The live-fire portion emphasizes Defensive Accuracy—balancing speed and precision under realistic conditions. Students will practice engaging threats at varying distances, learning how to adapt their response based on the size and proximity of the threat.

Previous Training Prerequisites:
NRA First Steps Pistol Orientation
NRA Basic Pistol
Basic Pistol Fundamentals (BPF) or equivalent training
Personal Protection in the Home Course
Required Equipment:
- Sturdy belt w/ Strongside OWB holster
- Handgun of your choice.
- 2-3 Magazine with pouches or speed loaders.
- 250 rounds of appropriate ammunition
- Eye and ear protection
- Lunch, snacks and a hydration
Upon completion, students will receive a Certificate of Completion that meets the training criteria to apply for a Florida Concealed Weapon or Firearm License.
